Serve Each Other Well
8 And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”[a] 9 Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. 10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God
1 Peter 4:8-10(NKJV)
In today’s society the word servitude has taken on a very negative and painful connotation. Due to the many situations in which various people were forced into serving others in harsh conditions and situations, such as slavery, domestically abusive relationships and sex trafficking; the mere mention of serving makes some people cringe. While these situations should make us cringe and push us to a mindset to prevent these actions, we should not look to avoid situations of servitude, especially when it’s God ordained.
Despite the conditions that have presented themselves in the history of our past serving others is still an honorable and expected act of stewardship God designed and desires for us. Now I know you may be thinking “ I’m not serving anybody, they have two hands just like myself” or I’m nobody’s maid, I’m not doing that.” Understand I’m not saying we should all rush out and look for occupations in which we act in the capacity of a server( unless God directs you to of course). However, I am saying that as children of God we should live in the vein of love and humility with a servant’s heart.
In this scripture the Apostle Peter was laying down a foundational principle as to how believers should treat each other as a result of their belief and love for God. In essence he is saying we are to love and serve each other with an intense and passionate love, a love that puts the needs of others before itself. Not only are we to love and serve each other but we are to be hospitable and do it without grumbling. You may be saying that sounds unfair, further you may be thinking “but what about me”, and that’s a fair question. The answer lies in the first sentence of verse 8. See Peter admonishes us “have fervent love for one another”. The key is in understanding EVERYONE who says they believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior is held accountable to serve each other. The principle of serving is one of mutual benefit. If all of God’s children could be consumed with loving and serving each other, then no one would go unattended, unfulfilled or unloved.
Be Blessed
